Authorities in Texas are expected to provide an update Saturday after at least eight people died in what police are calling a "mass casualty incident" at rapper Travis Scott's show in Houston on Friday night.

Fans attending the show, which was part of a Houston music festival called Astroworld, surged toward the stage during Scott's performance. This triggered panic in the crowd of tens of thousands and police said it started causing some injuries.

"People began to fall out, become unconscious, and it created additional panic," Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena told a news conference.

Seventeen people were taken to hospitals, including 11 who were in cardiac arrest, Pena said, and "scores of individuals" were injured.

A high school student who was in the crowd described to reporters that people rushed to get closer to the stage when Scott started his set and that it felt like 100 F in the crowd.
