Employees of a grass roots chocolate factory in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are battling rebel groups to keep the community venture alive. The business, located in the Virunga National Park, not only faces deadly attacks from rebel groups, but according to the United Nations, the government as well. It’s claimed that state authorities harvest cacao pods in abandoned fields and sell the beans illegally in neighbouring Uganda. Soldiers that are deployed to protect workers in the fields are also accused of stealing cocoa and reselling it to smugglers. Despite the challenges, the Virunga Origins Chocolates is determined to thrive to create job opportunities and deter people from joining rebel groups.
