Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday that "significant progress" was made on the last day of the G20 on a number of climate issues.
"Discussions on the environment and the fight against climate change were woven through our sessions," the PM said during a new conference as leaders prepared to head off to COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland.
"We did make significant progress on recognizing that 1.5 degrees as the ambition we need to share, on moving forward and identifying the phasing out of coal as an essential goal on fighting and reducing methane emissions as being key. And also recognizing with the doubling of Canada's climate financing to the developing world," Trudeau said.
The United Nations reiterated warnings this week that with the current policies promised by parties to the Paris climate agreement, the Earth will warm more than 2.7 C by the end of this century.
The Paris agreement aimed to keep it below 2 C and as close to 1.5 C as possible. The G20 was debating how to reword that target to make 1.5 C more critical.
