An American woman convicted for helping to murder her mother while on a luxury holiday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali was released from prison on October 29, 2021, after serving seven years of her 10-year sentence. Heather Mack was found guilty of aiding her then-boyfriend Tommy Schaefer in the 2014 murder of her mum, wealthy Chicago socialite Sheila von Wiese-Mack. The pair murdered the 62-year-old woman and stuffed her body into a suitcase before fleeing to a hotel room about 10km (6 miles) away. While Schaefer remains behind bars, Mack was released early on “good behaviour” and will be deported back to the United States.
