With the Julian Assange case back in the headlines, former Democratic candidate for president Tulsi Gabbard has hit out at the Biden administration’s pursuit of the WikiLeaks founder.
This week, Washington outlined the grounds of its appeal against the UK’s rejection of Assange’s extradition to the US.
‘If they succeed in [extraditing Assange], this will be yet another nail in the coffin of democracy here in our country and around the world,’ Gabbard said.
In January, a UK court claimed that Assange’s fragile mental state meant he couldn’t be extradited to the US – as he wouldn’t be able to withstand solitary confinement.
However, US lawyers now say he could serve out his sentence in his native Australia instead.
