Trudeau shares vision for Canada after unveiling new cabinet | FULL
CA, 27 Oct 2021
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to take questions during a news conference Tuesday afternoon following the swearing-in of his new cabinet.
The prime minister gave his cabinet a major overhaul as he geared up to rapidly deliver on his top priorities for his Liberal minority government during his third term as prime minister.
The new cabinet is a slightly larger lineup that adds nine new faces, drops three and moves most other senior ministers to new posts.
In one of the biggest moves, Harjit Sajjan, heavily criticized for his handling of sexual misconduct allegations in Canada’s military, is leaving the defence portfolio to take up a new post in international development. Anita Anand, who led the charge to procure vaccines during the pandemic as public services and procurement minister, will take over at trouble-plagued National Defence, only the second woman to head that post.
When asked what message he wants to send to Canada's energy sector following the swearing in of his cabinet, Trudeau reaffirmed that climate change is real, adding "we know we need to look towards the future."
Plus, Trudeau said he appointed Anand because in her past role, she was "extraordinarily effective" at supporting Canadians amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He added part of the job of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is to "be there to support Canadians" especially as the CAF has faced multiple probes into senior leaders over sexual misconduct allegations.
