Israel's longest-serving Palestinian prisoner freed after 40 years

CA, 06 Jan 2023
Karim Younis, Israel’s longest-serving Palestinian prisoner went free on Thursday after serving a 40-year sentence. His release from prison came as members of Israel’s new right-wing government called for him to be stripped of his citizenship.

Younis, 60, was convicted of kidnapping and killing Avraham Bromberg, an Israeli soldier, in 1983 in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

“For the last 40 years we have been dreaming about freedom and we have been dreaming how our relatives will welcome us,” he said upon his release.

Younis received a hero’s welcome in his hometown, the Israeli-Arab village of Ara.
