Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew provided an update on Monday on the ongoing investigation into the shooting that occurred at Richneck Elementary School, where a teacher was shot by a 6-year-old student on Friday.

Chief Drew reiterated that the incident “was not accidental, it was intentional” as he provided details of how officers handled the situation and moved children to safety.

The victim was in stable condition after one gunshot entered through her hand towards her upper chest, according to the police. She remains in the hospital while the suspect remains in custody.

Drew said the student pulled the gun out, pointed at the teacher and fired at her. He said there was no physical struggle over the gun preceding the gunshot and that no students were injured.
