A monument to Catherine the Great was torn down in Odesa yesterday, after a landmark decision to destroy a symbol of centuries of Russian rule.
The massive statue of the 18th-century Russian empress, who founded the Black Sea city in 1794 on territory captured from the Ottoman Empire, was hauled off of its pedestal with a steel cable in the dead of night as crowds looked on.
Utility workers also removed the figures of the empress’s four favourites and consorts standing around the pedestal beneath her feet.
