Dresden, Germany police said Saturday that a suspected hostage-taker died of the injuries he sustained during the police operation conducted to free a woman and child taken hostage.

The incident occurred in the eastern German city at the shopping mall "Altmarkt-Galerie" in the historic city centre near the famous Striezelmarkt Christmas market.

According to police, the 40-year-old man was believed to have killed his 62-year-old mother in an apartment building in the Prohlis district of Dresden, before making his way to the city centre. Local reports also said the suspect was believed to have tried to break into the premises of a local radio station earlier in the day and police were seen undertaking investigations at the building.
