Located at South Korea’s westernmost tip, Baekryeong Island is far closer to North Korea than the South. To deter invasion, tanks line the roads, guards are mounted on every hill and concrete pyramid-shaped fortifications cover the beaches. The nearly 5,000 residents who live here have learned to live under constant low-level threat.
