Tetsuya Yamagami was formally charged with the murder of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe on January 13, 2023. Abe was assassinated with a handmade gun as he was giving a speech for an election campaign on July 8, 2022. Yamagami reportedly held a grudge against the Unification Church for impoverishing his family, saying it persuaded his mother to donate around 100 million yen (US$774,700), and blamed Abe for promoting the religious organisation. The trial will begin in several months due to the case’s complexity.
