A Russian rocket hit a residential area in the village of Kopyliv in the region just outside Kyiv on Saturday, according to Kyiv's regional governor Oleksiy Kuleba.

The rocket attack left a large blast crater and damaged windows and roofs in several privately owned houses in the village which is about 30 kilometres away from the capital.

Reuters journalists in the capital heard a series of blasts in Kyiv before the air raid siren even sounded, which is highly unusual.

“There was no alarm, and we did not expect it,” Oleh, a local resident, told Reuters.

Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said Russia's missiles had likely been fired along a high, looping ballistic trajectory from the north, which would explain why the air raid siren did not sound.

Ukraine is not able to identify and shoot down ballistic missiles, he told the Ukrainska Pravda online outlet.
