'It could save your life': UK deputy PM Oliver Dowden explains emergency alert
Guardian, 23 Apr 2023
The UK's deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden, explained that the government would test an emergency alert via text message that could save lives. Speaking on Sky News's Sophie Ridge on Sunday, Dowden said: 'It is a bit irritating at the time, but in future people could be grateful for it because in a real emergency, this could be the sound that saves your life.'
Dowden also said that people who received the alert didn't need to do anything, adding: 'It's another tool in the toolkit. I think most British people in these situations keep calm and carry on.' The alert is due to be sent out at 3pm on Sunday.
