Undersea explorers have located the wreck of a Japanese transport ship that was torpedoed during World War II by Allied forces who did not realise it was carrying more than 1,000 prisoners of war. The Montevideo Maru was torpedoed on July 1, 1942, by a US submarine. Considered Australia’s worst-ever maritime disaster, the sinking took the lives of an estimated 979 Australians, including at least 850 troops, as well as civilians from 13 other countries. The discovery on the bed of the South China Sea northwest of the Philippines happened 12 days after a search operation began on April 6, 2023, and about a week before Anzac Day, a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand.
