The United States and the Philippines kicked off their annual military drills on April 11, 2023. This year's exercises are reportedly the largest in decades and come amid shared concerns between the long-term allies over rising regional tensions. The drills come one day after Beijing ended its three-day exercises around Taiwan in response to an unprecedented high-level meeting between Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The US-Philippines exercises are the first under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose predecessor Rodrigo Duterte had sought to scale back the drills in order to pursue closer ties with Beijing.
