Sudan crisis: Canada announces over $30M in aid amid ongoing crisis | LIVE
CA, 04 May 2023
International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan announced on Wednesday that the Canadian government was investing more than $30 million in humanitarian aid for Sudan.
He said the funding is part of an overall package of more than $71 million for not only Sudan, but neighbouring countries being impacted by the crisis. The money will go towards "experienced partners" working on the ground including United Nations organizations, like the World Food Program.
Warring factions had agreed to a new seven-day ceasefire from Thursday, but air strikes on Wednesday could undermine chances for a lasting truce that would help ease the deepening humanitarian crisis.
About 100,000 people have been forced to flee so far with little food or water, and the United Nations warned on Tuesday that the number who flee to neighbouring countries could eventually exceed 800,000.
