A 24-hour ceasefire between rival commanders in Sudan has collapsed, shortly after it was due to take hold at 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Tank fire and loud shooting could be heard in the capital, Khartoum. At least 270 people have been killed and many more injured in the fighting, the World Health Organization said, citing Sudan's health ministry. The casualty count may rise in the days ahead, as many civilians are trapped in their homes, running low on the basics to survive such as food and water. For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had condemned the conflict, warning Sudan's humanitarian situation has turned "catastrophic." How quick and how much aid can be delivered to thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire?
