Severe flooding swamped parts of southwest Florida on Wednesday evening, washing out streets in Fort Lauderdale and shutting down the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Approximately 30 centimetres of rain fell in a matter of hours, according to the National Weather Service, which issued an alert warning that the situation could be “life threatening.”

In a statement, the City of Fort Lauderdale asked people to stay off the roads until the water has subsided.

So far there have been no report of injuries or death.
