“This is a crisis”: White House urges Congress to act after latest Texas shooting

CA, 09 May 2023
Speaking in Washington, D.C., on Monday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed dismay and concern after a gunman opened fire at a Dallas-area outlet mall on Saturday, killing eight and wounding seven before being killed by a nearby police officer.

“It is the 128th day of 2023, and yesterday — according to leading accounts — we witnessed the 201st mass shooting in this country this year. That means we are averaging more than one a day,” Jean-Pierre said. “This is a crisis. Congress must do something about it.”

Jean-Pierre also added that the White House has spoken out consistently about the concerning rise of hate-fuelled violence across the country.

Dashcam video of the Saturday tragedy circulated online over the weekend, showing the gunman getting out of a car and shooting at people on the sidewalk. More than three dozen shots could be heard as the vehicle that was recording the video drove off.
