Former Guantanamo Bay inmate showcases 20-year ordeal in paintings

AFP, 08 May 2023
Ahmed Rabbani was freed from Guantanamo Bay recently after serving after being detained by Pakistani authorities and 'sold' to the CIA in September 2002 for $5000. He insists his case was one of mistaken identity. Fluent in Arabic, he specialised in guiding visitors from the Middle East -- a factor which contributed to him being misidentified. While imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay, painting became an obsession for him. "Through painting I would feel myself outside Guantanamo. There, painting was everything to me," he said.
