With the first China-Central Asia Summit being held in the ancient Chinese capital Xi'an on Thursday, The Hub with Wang Guan looks at the expected outcomes, new projects and the benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) through the eyes of former Uzbek Foreign Minister Vladimir Imamovich Norov. In this exclusive, Norov, also a former secretary-general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, says the common destiny community of China and Central Asia will serve the interests of all countries in the region and contribute to peace and prosperity in Eurasia. He also details the benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative, including the potential to lift eight million people out of extreme poverty in the countries along the routes, and 32 million out of moderate poverty. He discounts the accusations of China exercising undue influence on Central Asia, calling it mutually beneficial cooperation.
Shigeo Katsu, president of the Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan, tells The Hub with Wang Guan that he is fortunate to have "witnessed history." On September 7, 2013, President Xi Jinping, then on a state visit to Kazakhstan, first proposed a "bold initiative" to link three billion people by building an overland economic belt. That was how the Belt and Road Initiative evolved. Katsu also talks about the BRI's contribution in putting Asian universities on the map and responds to the Western allegations that the BRI is a debt trap.
