What would a WestJet pilot strike mean for travellers?
CA, 13 May 2023
A WestJet pilot strike is looming ahead of summer holidays, and a widespread strike of pilots could happen as early as Tuesday. The union representing more than 1,000 WestJet pilots says the staff are underpaid and overworked, while the airline owned by private equity firm Onex claims the pilots are fairly compensated.
With many travellers making summer plans and flight demand surging post-pandemic, a pilot shortage that existed even before COVID-19 is now exacerbated by industry turbulence.
Experts warn that the public should brace for more pilot strikes in the coming year, with northern and remote locations being the ones that may be the most impacted.
