NATO chief meets UK PM Sunak to talk Russian retreat from Kherson, US midterms, and more

CA, 10 Nov 2022
Speaking outside of 10 Downing Street in London, England on Wednesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reacted to news that Russian forces were withdrawing from the battleground city of Kherson, Ukraine.

Stoltenberg praised the bravery of the Ukrainian troops involved in the counter-offensive and pointed to several theatres where Russian forces have experienced reverses in a strategic sense since the invasion began.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday ordered his troops to withdraw from the occupied Ukrainian city of Kherson and take up defensive lines on the opposite bank of the River Dnipro.

The announcement marked one of Russia's most significant retreats and a potential turning point in what Moscow calls its "special military operation", now nearing the end of its ninth month.

Speaking with reporters, Stoltenberg outlined what he described as "several huge mistakes" made by Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a strategic sense, before and since launching his invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.
