Now 60 years old, this trade embargo has been perpetuated primarily at the wish of Washington. Back then, in 1962, John F. Kennedy was US President, and Fidel Castro the revolutionary leader of Cuba: a Communist too close for comfort for Washington in the depths of the Cold War era. Arms sales had been banned 4 years before and Cuba leant on its major ally for that: the Soviet Union. Today you may wonder why the embargo remains, and if it has any hope of lifting.
