2022 Nobel prize winner Annie Ernaux: 'I feel I have a new responsibility'

Guardian, 07 Oct 2022
French writer Annie Ernaux, who is 82, has won the 2022 Nobel prize in literature, the 17th woman out 119 laureates in the award’s history. Ernaux, who writes novels about daily life in France, as well as non-fiction, is one of her country's most acclaimed authors. In 2019 her fiction-memoir, The Years, was shortlisted for the International Booker prize. The Years covered six decades of social and personal history, from Ernaux's working-class childhood in wartime to postwar Normandy. The writer says she has 'a new responsibility' after winning the Nobel prize, 'carrying on the fight for injustice'. Ernaux went on to say: 'I can tell you I will fight until my last breath so that women be able to choose to become mothers or to choose not to. It's a fundamental right'
