China's foreign ministry has said a BBC reporter did not identify as a journalist, after the broadcaster said he was detained by police while covering a protest in Shanghai.
A ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, said it had noted the BBC statement about the incident but it did not reflect what had happened. The BBC said on Sunday Chinese police had assaulted one of its journalists covering a demonstration in the city and detained him for several hours
