Thousands of fishermen in the Philippines have been banned from fishing and ordered to stay ashore as authorities struggled to contain an oil spill from a tanker that sank in waters south of the capital Manila. The Princess Empress, carrying 800,000 litres (210,000 gallons) of industrial fuel oil, suffered engine trouble and sank in rough seas off Oriental Mindoro province on February 28, 2023. Thousands of fishermen in the affected province fear the loss of their major source of income, as the spill threatens the region’s economy and rich marine life.
