As the earthquake death toll in Turkey and Syria reaches 42,000, the United Nations is launching an appeal for $1 billion to help the millions of survivors in desperate need of aid. France has been "working with the UN and international NGOs" on the ground, French Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Anne-Claire Legendre tells FRANCE 24. France has already sent "emergency medical units" which can treat 100 patients a day, and is sending "40 tonnes of relief support, including tents, food, energy and heat for those now living in the rubble."
