After years of abuse by her ex-husband, including breaking her teeth and hands, Marwa was granted a legal separation in Afghanistan under the former US-backed government. After the Taliban took over in 2021, however, her husband claimed he would not accept the divorce, and commanders ordered her back into his clutches. Marwa had to flee hundreds of kilometres away to hide with her eight children.
