U.S. First Lady Jill Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are expected to host the annual International Women of Courage Awards on Wednesday, marking the first time the awards have taken place at the White House.

The awards are administered by the State Department and recognize "women from around the world who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equity and equality, and the empowerment of women and girls, in all their diversity, and more, often at great personal risk and sacrifice," according to a statement from Biden's office.

The ceremony takes place on International Women's Day and has seen more than 180 women, from 80 countries, receive the award since it was established in 2007.
