Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer reiterates support for Northern Ireland deal
Sky, 27 Feb 2023
Sir Keir Starmer has once again indicated his plans to support Rishi Sunak's Northern Ireland deal.
Speaking to business leaders in London, Sir Keir said he expects to back the PM's plan.
He said: "It's my long-held belief, having talked to businesses, particularly in Northern Ireland, but also in Dublin, that there are practical steps forward in relation to the Protocol that would make the Protocol work a lot better that could have been taken 18 months, two years ago, but we've been stuck in an impasse."
He added: "The question will be whether the Prime Minister has the strength to sell it to his backbenchers or not.
"I think many people will be frustrated that this is the loop we've been stuck in for a very very long time, and it's not something we'd have with a Labour government, because we don't have those divisions in our party on this issue."
