Ohio train derailment: Authorities provide update on East Palestine clean-up | LIVE
CA, 01 Mar 2023
Officials in East Palestine, Ohio, including from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), are expected to provide its daily update on Tuesday about the train derailment that led to a massive chemical spill. Since the derailment, residents have since reported health issues including rashes, nausea and other illnesses.
In response to a question about residents who say they don't trust what officials are telling them about their safety, East Palestine Mayor Trent R. Conaway said Monday that "we have to rely on our federal and state agencies to give us that information. What we're getting from them says everything is good."
"I know there are definitely questions about the rashes and the illnesses, so we're working with the federal agency EPA, the department of health to get those answers for everybody," Conaway said. "Our residents are getting frustrated — we're working as fast as we can to get those answers."
Last Thursday, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Jennifer Homendy said during a preliminary report that "we know what derailed the train — we have a lot of questions."
