At least two people were confirmed dead and more than 50 still missing the morning after an open-pit coal mine collapsed in northern China on February 22, 2023. Around 300 rescuers had arrived and more were on their way to the site in Alxa Left Banner, an administrative division in the southwestern part of China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang have ordered an investigation into the accident. Mine safety has long been a headache for China, with a significant number of deadly accidents recorded at mining operations around the country.
