Russia-Ukraine war: UNGA meets for second day as conflict nears 1-year mark | LIVE

CA, 23 Feb 2023
The UN General Assembly will meet for a second day on Thursday to discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine as the conflict approaches the one-year mark. Member states are expected to vote on a resolution condemning Russia's war.

Addressing the assembly on Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced Russia. “As I said from day one, Russia’s attack on Ukraine challenges the cornerstone principles and values of our multilateral system,” Guterres said.

"Meanwhile, we have heard implicit threats to use nuclear weapons," Guterres added. "The so-called tactical use of nuclear weapons is utterly unacceptable. It is high time to step back from the brink… War is not the solution. War is the problem.”

Speaking later on, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly also said that Putin is losing his grip on reality, adding that “his latest address proves that he remains unmoored from this reality.”

Thursday's vote follows two similar votes the General Assembly passed, though not unanimously.
