White House national security spokesperson John Kirby on Monday urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to use his visit to Moscow this week to push Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine and have his troops leave the country.

Kirby, however, said they were concerned Xi would instead reiterate calls for a ceasefire that would leave Russian forces inside Ukrainian sovereign territory. He added that Xi should speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the impact the war has had on Ukraine.

Putin's recent visit to Mariupol was also discussed, with Kirby saying he hoped the president got to "see what his troops, his military and his war did to that city."
