As the Biden administration holds its second "Summit for Democracy" in Washington, D.C., The Hub with Wang Guan discusses if democracy is a monopoly to be dictated exclusively by the United States. Rick Dunham, co-director of the Global Business Journalism program at Tsinghua University, says Washington can't export its own standards of democracy to other countries, a bid that has resulted in creating disastrous vacuums. Emanuel Pastreich, president of The Asia Institute, sees the weakness of U.S. democracy as the failure to develop an accompanying democratic economy. Instead, capital remains concentrated in the hands of a few. The burgeoning U.S. military industrial complex is another problem. To justify the budget for it, the U.S. has to project its own negative measures on China and depict it as an adversary, a move that is both tragic and lamentable.
