On the base of the GIGN, the gendarmerie's elite tactical unit, in Versailles-Satory, near Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron posthumously awarded the Legion of Honour to Major Arnaud Blanc, an elite French gendarme who was killed in French Guiana, an overseas territory of France in South America, while taking part in an operation to combat illegal gold mining.
