Humza Yousaf has been elected the first minority ethnic leader of the Scottish National party following a leadership campaign that exposed deep divisions in the party following Nicola Sturgeon's shock resignation in February.

The former health secretary beat his centre-right rival, Kate Forbes, with 48% of the vote. In his first statement following the result announcement, Yousaf said he would lead the SNP in the interests of all members, not only those who voted for him. He went on to say his first priority would be protecting people from the cost of living crisis by extending childcare, supporting small businesses and empowering local authorities.

The SNP leader assured his party was united behind its support for independence, as he is determined 'this generation' will deliver Scottish independence.
