Trucker protests: Ottawa police arrest 70 in push to end convoy blockade | FULL

CA, 18 Feb 2022
Ottawa Police, the OPP and RCMP delivered an update on Friday regarding the ongoing enforcement related to the so-called "Freedom Convoy" surrounding Parliament Hill, amid a "police operation" currently taking place downtown.

"We're in control of the situation on the ground," said Ottawa Interim Police Chief Steve Bell.

Police are in the midst of an operation to clear out protesters who have been encamped for 22 days in the nation’s capital, with 70 individuals arrested as of 3 p.m. local time Friday. Some convoy organizers have issued calls for participants to retreat and snow barricades are being built up on the streets.

The operation by law enforcement and tactical teams from multiple jurisdictions has been largely peaceful, though police are equipped with tear gas and a range of other law enforcement tools in their bid to remove the encampment.

Police say Pat King, a prominent organizer with the demonstrations, is among those in custody. Mounted units are also on scene.
