Kim Potter sentenced to 2 years in prison for death of Daunte Wright
CA, 19 Feb 2022
Former suburban Minneapolis, Minn. police officer Kim Potter was sentenced to two years in jail on Friday, two months after being convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter in the April 2021 death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black motorist.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Regina Chu heard from family members of Wright's, including his father and the mother of the 20-year-old's son.
"My son Dante's life was taken away way too soon. And he's never coming back. This has affected my whole family," Wright's father Aubrey said.
Then, Potter herself spoke to issue an apology to the family.
"I am so sorry that I hurt you so badly. My heart is broken, devastated for all of you," she told the family in the courtroom.
Without a criminal history, state guidelines on the charges Potter was convicted for range from slightly more than six to eight-and-a-half years in prison.
It is presumed in Minnesota that those who show good behaviour will serve two-thirds of their sentence in prison and the rest on supervised release, often known as parole. That means with only a two year sentence, she will serve 16 months behind bars. She also faces a fine of US$1,000 on manslaughter convictions.
