An artillery shell struck the wall of a kindergarten in the government-held town of Stanytsia Luhanska in eastern Ukraine on February 17, 2022. The town was reportedly hit by shelling from separatist rebels firing across the ceasefire line. The rebel forces accused Ukrainian soldiers of firing first, with residents of separatist-controlled Donetsk reporting shelling and fire from the government side. Ukraine and its Nato allies accused Russia of playing a role in the attack, a claim Moscow denies. The region remains tense after more than 100,000 Russian troops were sent to the border, prompting concerns in the West of a possible invasion. Moscow says it has begun withdrawing its troops from the border, a claim Washington has dismissed as “false”.
