Perhaps the most eye-catching venue of the Beijing Winter Olympics used to be an old abandoned steel mill in the western edge of the city. Now known as Big Air Shougang, or the Snow Flying Ribbon, it's the only venue in the Beijing zone of the winter games. Big Air Shougang's design has ribbon curves resembling the traditional "flying apsaras" of the ancient Buddhist murals in Dunhuang. It's the world's biggest permanent air structure, and it will remain a top venue for snowboarding and freestyle skiing competitions, and a recreational center, well after the 2022 Games. It was the site of two gold finishes for Team China - Gu Ailing who won the gold in the women's freeski big air and Su Yiming who clinched the gold in the men's snowboard big air. Tian Wei had an exclusive interview with Nicolas Godelet, an architect and engineer, who's the director of the NG-Lab Architecture office. He is a member of the team which designed the Big Air Shougang venue. The Belgian architect and landscaper has been living in China for 20 years, fascinated by the Chinese language and jiaguwen - those are inscriptions on ancient Chinese oracle bones used to look into the future. Before working on the Big Air venue, he has done many other quality projects around China.
