Donna and Colin Craig-Brown thought they had one for the record books, a mammoth mutant potato discovered in the couple’s New Zealand garden. The lumpy vegetable, which they named Dug, tipped the scales at 7.8kg (17lbs), earning the spud star-status in their small Waikato town. But this record-breaking find turned out to be an incredible impostor after confirmation that it wasn’t a potato at all, but rather a scarred and deformed tuber of a gourd. Colin, who received the bad news in a letter from scientists who analysed its DNA for the Guinness World Records, says he’s ready to find another world record in his garden, preferably one he grows himself.
