COVID-19: Canadian officials give update as restrictions continue to loosen | LIVE

CA, 18 Mar 2022
Canadian officials are set to provide an update on the country's ongoing response to COVID-19 as restrictions continue to loosen nationwide.

On Thursday, the federal government announced Canada is scrapping its pre-arrival COVID-19 testing requirement for fully vaccinated travellers starting April 1.

Currently, travellers entering Canada are required to present proof of a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 24 hours of their flight or arrival at the Canada-U.S. land border. A molecular test taken up to 72 hours prior to travellers’ arrival is also still accepted.

But starting next month, travellers who are fully vaccinated — with two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine — won’t have to show either.

Fully vaccinated travellers might still have to undergo random testing when they arrive in Canada, but they don’t have to quarantine while awaiting their results, Duclos added.

Even with restrictions loosening, however, there are still some concerns of future potential outbreaks as infections globally have started to creep up again. The increase is caused by a combination of factors, including the highly transmissible Omicron variant and its cousin the BA.2 sub-variant, as well as lifting of public health and social measures, according to the World Health Organization.
