Hundreds of people took to the streets in the Taiwanese capital Taipei to show solidarity with Ukraine on March 13, 2022. Some demonstrators said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which started on February 24, serves as a wake-up call for Taiwan. Mainland China considers self-ruled Taiwan a breakaway province that must be taken under its control, by force if necessary. Taiwanese have also donated large amounts of supplies and money to Ukraine. The island’s government has said it would join international sanctions against Russia. A special programme to take in Ukrainian refugees was also announced on March 11.
