Trudeau, cabinet officials discuss Canada's ongoing response to Russian invasion of Ukraine | LIVE
CA, 01 Mar 2022
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau along with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, Minister of National Defence Anita Anand, and Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser will be holding a media availability amid the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Canada has hit Russia with a number of sanctions following their invasion of Ukraine last week.
Among those on the sanctions list is Dmitry Utkin, a former Russian special forces officer who allegedly founded the Wagner Group, a private military contractor accused of helping Moscow.
Roughly 300 soldiers with the Wagner Group arrived in the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, wearing civilian clothes and helping to lay the groundwork for war, two European officials told the New York Times.
Meanwhile, Europe is facing a massive new refugee crisis because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Canada should prepare to provide asylum to those fleeing the violence, says a Canadian security expert.
“This would be a chance for Canada to really, really step up to the plate,” said Michael Bociurkiw, a Canadian in Ukraine who served as the spokesman for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe during the height of tensions following Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014.
