Russia's Ministry of Defence said on February 27, 2022, that it was working with the National Guard of Ukraine to jointly “protect” the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The ministry added that the joint effort guaranteed that “nationalists or other terrorist organisations will be unable to stage a nuclear provocation by taking advantage of the current situation in the country”. Russian forces seized control of Chernobyl on February 25, a day after the start of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Chernobyl is the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster in 1986, when a reactor meltdown spewed radioactive waste across Europe. Ukraine warned that radiation levels have risen in the area following its seizure by Russian troops, but the UN’s nuclear watchdog said it currently poses no danger.
