Candidates hoping to become South Korea’s next president started campaigning on February 15, 2022. Already locked in a tight race are Lee Jae-myung of the liberal Democratic Party of Korea and conservative People Power Party candidate Yoon Suk-yeol. Weighed down by high disapproval ratings and smear campaigns, they also face a third challenger. Minor opposition contender Ahn Cheol-soo is a famous software mogul and doctor, who is gaining support from voters who have grown tired of mainstream politics.
