Biden names Ketanji Brown Jackson as US Supreme Court nominee to replace Stephen Breyer | LIVE
CA, 26 Feb 2022
U.S. President Joe Biden is set to officially declare federal judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who currently sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, as his nominee to replace Associate Justice Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court when he retires later this year.
Biden announced Brown Jackson as his nominee earlier on Friday over Twitter, finally ending weeks of speculation on who would fill the coveted spot on the country's highest court. If confirmed, she would be the first Black woman to serve on the bench in the court's 232-year history and her appointment comes two years since Biden said his first Supreme Court pick would be a Black woman.
While Biden's pick is his first during the presidency, it would still not shift the court's current 6-3 conservative majority as Breyer was also chosen by former Democratic president Bill Clinton. Former president Donald Trump solidified the conservative majority during his single term when he was able to nominate and get confirmed three separate Supreme Court associate justices.
The Supreme Court, as the highest in the nation, is often the final word on contentious laws and is expected to announce its decision on an abortion case in Mississippi that could reshape abortion laws.
